Mary Lissel

A New Leaf Counselling & Trauma Therapy

Mary is a registered social worker in private practice with SASW (Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers) and a member with the CASW (Canadian Association of Social Workers). She currently holds a membership with CCPA (Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

 

She holds a advanced certificate in Somatic Experiencing Therapy as a Trauma Therapist through Somatic Experiencing International (traumahealing.org). She also holds numerous certificates for example FASD, Indigenous Cultural Training - MSS, Trauma Training (FFA), Solution Focused Therapy, Trauma Informed, CISD (Critical Incident Stress Debriefing).

 

She has a variety of experience working with individuals, teens, children and families and has worked with various cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

 

She started her career working as a crisis counsellor at the Saskatoon Sexual Assault Centre providing counselling and group therapy to survivors and their family members. Her career continued in Northern Saskatchewan working with the Meadow Lake Mental Health Clinic - North West Health District working as a generalist social worker providing counselling/therapy to adults, teens, children, families and couples. She provided services to smaller communities in the surrounding area as well as the Northern First Nations communities. Her work also included facilitating sexual abuse survivor group therapy, providing presentations on depression in the senior population, facilitated critical incident stress debriefing to staff in hospital and paramedic settings and worked in collaberation with Meadow Lake Tribal Council in regards to providing better solutions for addiction services.

 

Her work continued, working with mothers and babies for 12 years with La Leche League Canada by providing individual, group and couple counselling in regards to breastfeeding, weaning, and parenting.

 

Trauma and addictions is weaved through many of her clients lives thus she has been well suited to work with many of her clients with a trauma informed lens. Mary completed her practicum with Saskatoon Child and Youth Services/CATU & RUH Assessment Team providing individual and family clinical assessment, treatment plan and counselling/therapy to youth and family members. This involved collaborating with psychiatry, psychologists and school system (when applicable) to provide a treatment plan.

 

She has varied volunteer experience in her community. She worked with young mothers at Bethany Home providing support and education as they adjusted to their new role as young mothers in a group residential setting. Mary has been heavily involved in the Saskatoon homeschool community co-ordinating educations opportunities and presented at SHBE (SK Home Based Educators) conferences on a variety of topics. She has served on a number of Board of Directors such as the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra, Saskatoon Suzuki Strings to name a few. She has been a respite worker for Foster families and is a foster parent.

 

Mary enjoys spending time with her husband and children, traveling, hiking and loves to cook.
